MADAGASCAR

Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the world, and is a biodiversity hotspot - 80% of the plant and animal species occur nowhere else.

In the tropical seas off the southwest coast of Madagascar lies the 4th largest coral reef in the world, the Grand Recif de Tulear.

Ocean's Edge, in collaboration with Blue Ventures, an award-winning, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to marine conservation, education and sustainable development in tropical coastal communities, is pleased to offer and support this expedition.

Through these marine expeditions, volunteers from around the world join together on career breaks, student gap years and internships, working closely with field research teams, in partnership with local communities. The field research project being offered is carried out by overseas volunteers, who work closely with field research scientists and camp staff.

We are currently looking for overseas volunteers to work at the site in Andavadoaka, Madagascar. The research site is located next to it, on the most westerly point of the island. At the right, you can see it is a spectacular location.

Every 6 weeks a new team of volunteers arrives at the field site, ensuring year-round sustainability of the research in the region. There are, on average, 14 volunteers at the camp, and there are never more than 2 volunteers per staff member. In addition to volunteers, the camp comprises Malagasy and international research scientists, as well as local and international Blue Ventures staff.

Our 2008 prices vary according to diving qualifications. The full price expedition only applies to dive trainees - volunteers who are planning to learn to dive on the expedition. If you are already qualified as a diver you will be entitled to a reduction, depending on your level of certification.
